Competition in the mirrorless market couldn’t get much more intense. These days, it makes perfect sense to release a pro model, then follow it up a few months later with a cut-down version selling for a more affordable price. That’s what Panasonic has managed to achieve here.

There are specs in the Lumix DC-G90 that bear a striking resemblance to its forbearers, the G80 and GH5S, released last year. Unlike the GH5S however, Panasonic has now found a way to squeeze in a larger sensor (20.3Mp) and image stabilisation, without compromising the low-light capabilities of its older sibling. Even better, it has managed to do all this and fit it into a package selling for under £900. Its competitors certainly have a lot to live up to.

Video-tastic

When it comes to video, the G90 proves itself a very capable piece of tech. You can shoot unlimited video in 4K 30p format or FHD 1080p. If video is your main reason for choosing this camera, then you’ll be pleased to hear it comes with V-log L preinstalled. That might not sound a big deal, but it makes this the most affordable camera to have V-log L as standard.

It can also record high-speed video at up to 120fps, which means you’re able to achieve as much as 4x slow motion with ease. There’s also a mic and headphone socket for recording and monitoring audio.

Multi-talented

Stabilisation, long the preserve of high-end cameras, makes it into the new G90. Five-axis, dual image stabilisation claims to enable you to shoot five stops slower than normal – great when you’re trying to get sharp images in darker conditions, but even more useful when you’re shooting video footage handheld rather than on a tripod.

Its skills as a tool for photographers are no less impressive. Auto-focus speed is claimed to be as snappy as 0.07s. Its Live Viewfinder (LVF) uses an OLED screen capable of a 2,360K resolution and 0.74x magnification. On the rear, there’s a 3in OLED touchscreen that pivots when you want to get those low-angle shots. Oh, and did we mention that it comes with wifi and Bluetooth connectivity?

No one likes to run out of power while they’re mid-flow, especially when you’re shooting video. Thankfully the G90 includes USB charging so you can charge it up wherever you go – even while you’re using it.

Design-wise, it’s an elegant little beast that’s both dust- and splash-proof. Weighing a mere 536g, it won’t weigh you down, either – perfect if you want to take it on holiday with you, but just as handy if you’re thinking of shooting street images.

The frills

The LUMIX G90 comes with a few extra features you’re bound to like. The Live View Composite mode enables you to shoot long exposure composites without over exposing ambient light areas. Best of all, you can monitor the results in real time. Panasonic says the main use for this feature is for astrophotography, when you want to shoot star trails against a dark night sky, screening out city lights that might be in the background. We suspect it could come in handy in other ways, too – catching car light trails, for example.

Currently available in three models, you can buy it body-only, with a 12-60mm lens, or with a 14-140mm lens. If you shoot architecture or portraits, then the 12-60mm version is perfect, while the 14-140mm is there for those who need a good zoom – nature and landscape photographers might appreciate this one the most.

All in all, this is the perfect balance between affordability and new features. With its mirrorless credentials and attention to videography, you won’t be disappointed by the LUMIX G90.
