Happy World
Photography Day
2022

With a staggering 54,400 photos being taken every single second, and over 95 million of them ending up on Instagram each day, it’s probably a good thing we’ve got a whole day dedicated to celebrating our global love of photography!

This day is known as World Photography Day - the date where the whole world comes together to celebrate the art, craft, science and history of photography and it always falls on August 19th. But why? What actually is World Photography Day, and why is it on this same date each year?

To answer that, we need to jump back in time 184 years to 1837. It was on this date, all those years ago, that Louis Daguerre and Nicéphore Niépce discovered a new process for ‘developing’ a photograph. This discovery was that if a copper plate coated with silver iodide was exposed to light in a camera, then fumed with mercury vapour and fixed by a solution of table salt, a permanent image would be formed.

This process was later named as the Daguerreotype.

It wasn’t until 1839, on this same date (August 19th) that this photographic process was announced to the pubic when the French government purchased the patent and announced the invention as a gift, quoting it as being ‘Free to the World’. And as they say, the rest is history...

Throughout the years that followed, photography revolutionised the way we communicate, and it would be difficult to imagine our world without it. It connects us to places and moments we’d not be able to see unless we were actually there and since the rise in popularity of social media, allows us to tell our individual stories, whatever they might be.

In honour of those two milestones, World Photography Day has now become one of the biggest celebrations for photography in the world, celebrated annually across the globe and it’s exciting to think what the future could hold for photography.

So, now you know the history of this day, how about celebrating it by getting out there and shooting. Whether you’re using a smartphone, action camera, compact, DSLR or mirrorless, whatever it might be this day is here to encourage everyone to join in!

On the right we have some images taken by our Jessops customers for Image of the week.

And remember, if you’re uploading them to social media to use the hashtag #JessopsWorldPhotographyDay for all of us to see and don’t forget you can follow us across our social channels by clicking on the icons below.
