Take your personal best selfie

Action fans, runners, cyclists and adventurers - we know you love sharing your achievements, so here's how to make sure that shot of you crossing the finish line is on point. Memorise this guide and your trophy room walls will thank you for it...

Get that camera up

This is Self-Portrait 101, but the best angle is from above - if you've got the energy to raise that camera slightly above yourself, you'll get a better perspective on your face and your body won't be widened by your camera's lens.

Use your camera's self timer

No longer just a question of listening for the beeps and crossing your fingers that you're in shot - many modern cameras have WiFi-based remote control built in that allows you to use your smartphone to see what the camera can see, adjust settings, and take a picture when you're ready. This'll allow you to capture the entirety of a scene as well as your triumphant self!

Think about your background

This could be the shot that goes on the cover of your local paper, so don't just snap a picture without thinking - make sure you've got a clear, non-distracting background or that overwhelmed crowds are perfectly lined up. One tip to instantly improve your pictures is to try and make it look as though any surface or pattern goes on for ever, without any edges in the frame - so if you're in front of an audience, fill the shot with their cheering faces - or if you're in front of a wilderness, don't include a random road sign in your shot!

Props

Sounds obvious, but as a picture is worth 1000 words, including a few key accessories will make sure your achievement will be immediately recognisable by those paddling through their social streams. If you've just crossed a marathon finish line, show us your race number and medal; if your trainers are trashed from a Spartan race, hold ‘em up for the photo - or if you've triumphed in a triathalon, get a bit of your bike into shot as well. And the more mud the better, in our opinion...

Use burst mode

This setting's often overlooked, but if you're needing to capture a photo in a hurry then it could be the difference between a blinker and a keeper. Switch on burst and take as many frames as your camera will let you before it has to buffer: then when you're back at home (after a shower) you can check through your shots and pick your favourite.

Try a video

If you've got the time to take a quick snap, you've got the time to take a video - and with all social networks now supporting (and actively encouraging) users to share short films, this could help make your moment of glory even more widely seen. Same rules apply - and if you're filming for Facebook or Twitter, keep it brief!

Get it online pronto

If you are rocking a slightly newer camera with WiFi capabilities or have a WiFi ready SD card to hand, get your favourite shot online as soon as you can: use your race/event hashtags and include their account handles to make sure everyone relevant gets notified of your achievement.

Then all you need to do is sit back, relax, and watch the likes roll in. Congratulations - you (and your camera) earned it.
