How do I get into fashion photography

Want to get into fashion? To celebrate London Fashion Week we sat down with Jay McLaughlin, professional fashion photographer, and asked him for his advice on getting started in this exciting and creative style of picture-taking.

How do I start taking fashion images?

Obviously, a fashion photographer is nothing without a subject - but if you're just starting out, you might find it difficult or even a bit intimidating to work with models.

A good way to practice is to start with photographing yourself. No, not selfies - proper self portraits! This will clearly show you how different light conditions can change a face. Many modern cameras have built in wifi which can be controlled via your smartphone to make these portraits easy, but a mirror and a self timer can work just as well.

Once you grow in confidence, you can then ask friends and family members to pose for you - and once you've started building up a decent portfolio, you can move onto working with more experienced models.

What camera should I get for fashion photography?

There's really no such thing as a 'bad camera' - so the most important thing is to choose the camera that's the right fit for you. And there's absolutely no substitute for going into a shop, holding a camera and seeing how it feels in the hand.

When you're first starting with photography, any camera that gets you out taking photos is perfect. As you progress and learn, you may decide you need more control over your exposures - so if you are hoping to get serious, keep that in mind when selecting a first camera.

It's not necessarily the case that you need a huge DSLR - personally, I'm a fan of small mirrorless cameras. I've shot with big DSLRs and medium format cameras, but for me - as someone who photographs people - it's far more important to not be covering my face with a big imposing box... but that's just the way I approach my photography. You might be different!

The most important thing is to choose the equipment that works for you, that does what you want, and gives you the confidence to forget about the camera and just think about the subject.

Where can I find inspiration for my fashion images?

All photographers need ideas - and we're so fortunate right now to have so much available at our fingertips! Social media is an amazingly easy way to come up with concepts for photos and shoot.

Instagram should need no introduction. If you don't have an account, get one now! There are so many amazing photographers out there who you can be inspired by, and interact.

Before my photoshoots, I create mood boards using ideas I've found on Pinterest. It's always important to have an idea in your head of what you're creating before you click the shutter - and if you're working with other people on a shoot, showing them a mood board is a great way of explaining your ideas.

How can I become a fashion photographer?

The beauty of fashion photography is that it's ever-changing, and that anyone can do it. All you really need is a camera, and the ability to take in the world around you.

I'm often asked by people how to get into fashion photography, but there isn't really a secret or a trick - it's just about doing it. Grab a camera, go out, create images, and get them seen!
