Massive Optical Zoom
The 35x ultra wide-angle zoom featured on the SX40HS covers the equivalent of 24-840mm – everything from an ultra-wide perspective to one similar to looking through binoculars. The lens setup also features an Ultrasonic motor for effortless and near silent focusing, ideal for movie recording.
High Speed (HS) System and Intelligent IS
The SX40 uses a high sensitivity 12.1 megapixel CMOS sensor which is ideal for both low light and fast moving action, along with the inclusion of the super efficient DIGIC 5 image processor. The Image Stabiliser featured on this model gives up to 4.5-stops correction. In other words you can shoot at shutter speeds four-and-a-half stops slower than not having IS, for the same amount of light. The Intelligent IS function automatically chooses from 7 possible IS modes for sharp, stable photos and videos in a variety of challenging conditions.
Full HD Movies
Record your movie clips in Full 1080p HD quality, and there is also HDMI-CEC connectivity for lossless HDTV viewing and control of playback using the TV’s remote.
Smart Auto and Multi Area White Balance
The Smart Auto feature automatically selects settings from 32 still scenes and 21 movie combinations for the best possible image quality. Multi-area White Balance deals with separate areas of an image independently. This is ideal for areas with multiple light sources, for example taking a photo in a room with a window letting in daylight plus lighting from both traditional bulbs and fluorescent tubes. Usually a real headache, but not for the SX40 HS.
Electronic Viewfinder and Vari-Angle LCD
The SX40 has a 2.7-inch (6.8cm) vari-angle PureColor II VA LCD monitor for an extra clear and sharp view. However for those who prefer a traditional viewfinder there is also included an EVF (Electronic Viewfinder).

- Good Points
- Having had a Canon A630 for some years I have found using the SX40 hs fairly easy. Like the flip out back screen, viewfinder is fairly good (shows information rather than just image). Find that the camera tends to let in quite a lot of light in auto mode so I find setting the ISO at 100 in P Mode gives reasonable results. You do have to play around with the settings to get the best results. I like the features such as colour swap, which works well. Zoom lens is good for the camera price. The camera is more compact than an SLR allthough you still need a bag rather than a case.
- Bad Points
- The fact that to add a filter you have to buy a lens adapter at £27 in addition to the filter. The lens cap is a little fiddly when using the camera constantly.Would have liked an ISO 64 setting. You can catch some of the buttons when manipulating the camera, allthough without consequences. The price seems high compared to other similar makes with zoom features, but is much cheaper that a good SLR with zoom lens.
