Introducing the Ricoh Theta SC

Since it was first launched back in 2013, the Ricoh Theta line has been a huge hit, allowing people to shoot 360 degree images and video for the first time. In 2015, the high-end Theta S came along to address the needs of serious users and being put to specialist applications. And now, Ricoh has unveiled the Theta SC – a new 360 degree camera that’s designed for everyone. It’s easier to use and at 102g, is lighter than its predecessor, whilst producing the same superb image quality.

 So how does it work?

The secret to the Theta SC is that rather than being one camera, it’s actually two rolled into one – with one f/2 lens facing forwards and the other facing backwards. Meanwhile, inside its slim (45.2 x 130.6 x 22.9mm) body, there are two 1/2.3-inch type sensors, each with 12 million pixels. Clever processing merges the images or video from these two sensors into one feed to create a circular picture. Still images are made up from approximately 14 million pixels, while video can be recorded up to Full HD quality (1920 x 1080), at 30 frames per second.

You don’t need to worry about memory cards with the Theta SC – it has 8GB of internal memory and is capable of storing up to 1,600 large images (around 9,000 medium-sized images), or 63 minutes of Full HD video.

Easy sharing

Naturally, the Theta SC can connect wirelessly to a smartphone or tablet running the dedicated app. Using this, it’s possible to upload spherical images to the theta360.com website and share them on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Tumblr. If you like, you can also upload video to 360-degree channels like Google Maps, Google+ and YouTube. Videos can be shot in clips of up to 5 minutes long and edited on a connected smartphone or tablet, changing the image size, shape and composition with simple, intuitive controls.

Easy operation

By itself, the Theta SC is incredibly simple to use, with a switch on the side to swap between stills and video recording, along with a stop/start button that falls under your thumb when you’re holding the camera. An LED on the front panel also lets you know which mode it’s operating in.

To take full control over the Theta SC, it’s just a question of turning to your connected smartphone and using the app, with the live view image displayed on the phone’s screen. As well as enabling you to keep an eye on composition, this allows you to check the impact of setting changes.

Available in blue, beige, pink and white, the Theta SC looks cool enough to be used on adventures and smart enough for more urban and business-like environments.
