Description

The Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM lens is an extremely popular choice for Canon EOS owners who specialise in portrait photography. Its short telephoto perspective is flattering to subjects and offers control over depth of field.

Its fast aperture of f1.8 means that it is both suitable for shooting in very low light and can have very shallow depth of field if desired. In addition to this there is a circular aperture design which gives a softness to defocused areas when using smaller apertures. Focusing speed is fast too thanks to the USM focus motor which also has full time manual focus override. Super Spectra coatings keep ghosting and flare to an absolute minimum thus providing excellent colour and contrast.

This lens also has E-TTL II flash compatibility and a non-rotating front element, ideal for use with square filter systems.

Very good image quality
I bought this for use with a canon 70D but the lens brings you too close to the subject. It's great for full frame cameras but with cropped sensor cameras it's equivalent to a 135mm lens. That puts you too close to the subject and shooting indoor portraits are then limited to head shots unless it's a very large room to allow you to move about 12-15 feet away. I sent it back and now use a 50 mm lens which gives great quality pictures and lets you get more in the frame at close distances.

Excellent picture quality, Bokeh effect really easy to achieve, got good rugby pics
on a crop sensor type camera you need to be at a decent distance to get buildings / groups in.
