Jessops are supporting a fantastic photography competition to test the photography skills of all Rainbows, Brownies and Guides in the UK, in conjunction with the charity Plan UK

Millions of girls around the world live in poverty, and Plan and Girlguiding UK would like to change this by involving Girlguiding members of all ages in Plan's 'Because I am a Girl' campaign. So they are inviting Girlguiding units around the UK to explore the issues girls face, then express how they feel about this through photography/art and enter their images into a nationwide competition. Jessops are delighted to be a part of this exciting project

The competition, in conjunction with the charity Plan UK invites Girlguiding units around the UK to enter their images into a nationwide competition.

Taking your photographs - top hints and tips

  • Learn to hold your camera correctly - and comfortably - to ensure you get the best results.

  • When taking pictures of people outdoors, don't make them look directly into bright sunlight. They are likely to squint and spoil the photo.

  • Flash isn't just for night-time, use it during the day to provide fill-in flash when strong sunlight casts shadows on your subject.

  • Animals make for great pictures - but be prepared to take plenty of photos to get the perfect shot, and try not to use the flash as it may startle them.

  • To add interest to landscapes, and give a sense of perspective, always use someone or something as foreground.

  • Avoid taking pictures in bright sunlight, as intense light blanches out colours. Mornings and late afternoons are best.

  • If you want to capture the very best shot of that special moment, always take plenty of pictures. Digital cameras are ideal for this, as you can simply delete the photos you don't want without wasting film.
